London will try to beat traffic and air pollution with this new electric bus

Grist

Brits, rejoice! London’s iconic double-decker buses could get a new green makeover.

On Monday, city officials announced that London will begin test-driving an electric double-decker bus in October. Quartz has the details:

The bus will be built by Chinese firm BYD and will run on the number 16 bus route, which goes from northwest London down into Victoria Station. London has had single-decker electric buses on its streets since 2013, but electric double-deckers had previously been thought to be too difficult to build, due to the challenges in efficiently powering something so large, the Mayor’s office said in a release. But BYD’s new battery technology will apparently be light and cheap enough to run in a double-decker bus.

Brilliant! The plan is part of a commitment London city leaders made earlier this week. “At a global clean bus summit at City Hall in London, 24 cities pledged to roll out 40,000 low-emission buses by the end of the decade,”

Advertising on Facebook waste of time and money – Review

Have you ever thought about the money spent on Facebook for publicizing your business is utilized properly or not. Or the following that you have built with that money is useful or is it just some number and nothing else. Facebook can boost your business tremendously if you can build an audience on it, many companies invest thousands of dollars in it to build a brand. in this article I will tell you why Facebook is not good for your advertising campaign.

We recently did an experiment with Facebook, we ran a like campaign from Dec 2014 to Feb 2015 with minimal amount of money that was enough to attract 80 to 130 people per day to my page. Because we work with all categories of products our content was of everyone’s interest. In December when we just started the campaign we planned it for US only and were getting 3 to 4 likes per day because we had several filters on audience. We were looking for a specific set of people to follow us.

After a week we had around 45 followers. This was the time when we felt we must increase our reach but because we were evaluating the effectiveness of the advertisement program we dint wish to increase the money. Having that in mind we removed filters and expanded our country selection to china, Egypt, Philippines, Indonesia, Germany and India.

Just after 1 hour we got the changes approved. We were thrilled to see the response. We started getting around 30 likes per day which was almost 90 percent increase. we kept it running for a month without posting any new content and looked at it back in Jan end. By the end of Jan 2015 we had 903 like, which says we have 900 followers.

Meaning if we post something that will be published in news-feed of these 900 followers. it is a good return on investment 900 followers in 40 days is not a bad investment. Lets have a deep look in these 900 followers.

Most of these followers came from Philippines, Egypt and India. If you look at these profiles (you can look at their profiles when they are in your notification) you will find these are following thousands of pages but they don’t have many posts or friends. So it can be understood that these are not real people and they like every page they come across almost like a robot.

We started our post test, we posted around 5 posts and we got nothing in response absolutely no response from 900 people. not even for Apple watch, Moto 360 and Apple Mac Book.

How Facebook post distribution works – Facebook makes sure that they don’t serve spam to the users, so they will first show your post to some percentage of your followers, if they like the post or comment on it Facebook will think it is a valid and good post and it will serve it to more people and will continue to do so until they serve it to all your followers. But they will stop serving your post if your followers don’t respond.

What this means for you; you spend lot of money on your advertisement on Facebook in response you got many followers from around the world. now because your followers do not respond on your posts your posts are proven spam and wont be published to all.

In short, you paid money to Facebook so that they can declare you a spammer. to us it appears that if you are a small business owner you shouldn’t be even thinking of advertising on Facebook. But if you are a very big firm and your annual budget for advertising on Facebook is huge, you can start it and leave it. it may start giving you results after you have around a million followers.

That’s all from me. Let me know your thoughts in comments.

How to start a Startup

If you are reading this may be you are not able to sleep properly thinking you are not doing enough for your life.

Many start-ups come up every day and the most common thing amongst them is failure, yes FAILURE. At times they wont even reach the market before  they fail.

In this post I will tell you how to start a start-up that can sustain for long time.

Find your area of interest – First and the most necessary thing is an idea to start. if you don’t have an idea, first think of areas you love to work in, then find the missing part that you can fill up with your innovative idea. This works always. No matter how better the world is there is always a loop hole and you just have find the best one.

Chase idea NOT MONEY –  DO NOT chase money, chase your idea and money will chase you. Many start-ups fail because they start for money. Their plan starts with we will invest $5 and will convert them into 20 in reality they end up converting them in to 0$. If you know the area you love to work and know it thoroughly, you will save a lot of money and time and that will increase productivity. Be ready to do anything required to keep the thing going.

Work more over the product than the plan – do not spend most of the time on plan eventually everything changes. What you initially plan will change for sure. Start working on the product as you proceed you will get more ideas and your plans will change accordingly. Create a plane that can fly first, do not think of crossing English channel until you have finished first trial run.

Dont create something which is already created – uniqueness is the USP.  this can be debated further because many people think providing a better product will replace the old one from the market, but I feel until you have enough funds to combat an already setup product you must wait for the correct time.

Feedback at every stage – demo your product to people at every stage create video share and ask for feedback. Every feedback is important, think enough before you discard it.

Stop, look around and move – do not just create plan and move blindly always, periodically stop thinking about the product take a break and come back with fresh mind.

Enjoy the failure – Failure is far better than victory. Start-ups never win they all fail, over and over again, you just have to continue moving with failure. Every failure is a new idea and success is nothing but a bunch of failures. Think about it, what you are failing at was never even tried by anyone. Feel proud for failures as you do for success.

That’s all from me, write your stories in comments so that other people can learn from them.

Best of luck, stop reading start working!!!

How to stop spam referrals and filter them from Google Analytics (Using htaccess)

Many of us have seen spikes in traffic report from Google Analytics. These spikes bring joy to our minds and when we drill down the traffic we get disappointed because it is from a spam referral. In this article I will be explaining you how to combat spam referral.

Spam Referrals causes incorrect traffic analysis we all know, but major impact they leave over your web bandwidth. If your web site is running on VPS or Shared server, your bandwidth is important and needs to be preserved for real traffic. If your maximum bandwidth is eaten by spam referrals your real users may get “Busy Server” Response.

To Combat referral spams, you can implement following solutions,

  1. Modify htaccess file block spam referrals.
  2. Filter Traffic statistics from Google Analytics

Filtering traffic from Google Analytics is very easy and you can do it from the admin tab in your Analytics account. I personally don’t recommend filtering this because filters will just remove it from your traffic report but these referrals will continue to consume resources behind the scenes.

I found block them via htaccess is most effective way. Follow below steps to block them through Htaccess –

1) Go to Analytics account and note down referral domains that you think are spam.

2) In your htaccess file, use %{HTTP_REFERER} to get the referrer and verify if these referrers contains words which are same as from referral bots you got from step 1 –

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (priceg) [NC,OR]

3) if you have more than one spam create a list of RewiteCond –

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (priceg) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (darodar) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (hulfingtonpost) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (simple-share-buttons) [NC]

here we have asked Apache to look for referrers containing words from this list.

4) Now that we have caught the spam referral, lets throw it out and show them forbidden message.

RewriteRule .* – [F]

This code will block the page and spam bot will receive Error 403 like this

Capture
Here is how the whole code looks –

# Handle Spam bots
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (priceg) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (darodar) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (hulfingtonpost) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (simple-share-buttons) [NC]
RewriteRule .* – [F]

We have seen almost 4% savings in bandwidth each month after implementing it. Below is the final code you need to put in .htaccess with list of domains I know and should be blocked, let me know if you have seen domains other than these –

# Handle Spam bots
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (priceg) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (darodar) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (hulfingtonpost) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (ilovevitaly) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (buy-cheap-online) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (free-share-buttons) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (4webmasters) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (theguardlan) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (semalt) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (buttons-for-website) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (see-your-website-here) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (googlsucks) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (guardlink) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (Get-Free-Traffic-Now) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (event-tracking) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (free-share-buttons) [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} (simple-share-buttons) [NC]
RewriteRule .* – [F]
